Putin Vows Retaliation After Drone Attack Hits Russian City
Russian President Vladimir Putin has promised stronger military actions against Ukraine after a drone strike targeted the city of Kazan on Saturday, damaging a luxury apartment building but causing no reported injuries. The attack marked a significant escalation, with Kazan located about 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) from the conflict zone.
During a televised meeting on Sunday, Putin said, “Those who aim to destroy our country will face greater destruction themselves. They will regret their actions.” He made the remarks while addressing Tatarstan’s leader during a ceremony to open a new road in the region where Kazan is located.
The drone strike, which Russia called a “massive attack,” hit a high-rise glass building, causing explosions and fires. Videos circulating on Russian social media showed the dramatic impact, but officials reported no casualties. Ukraine has not commented on the incident.
The attack is part of an ongoing series of aerial strikes in the nearly three-year-long conflict. Putin has previously warned of targeting Kyiv with advanced missiles in response to Ukrainian attacks on Russian soil.
Russia claimed new territorial gains in eastern Ukraine, with the defense ministry announcing the capture of Lozova in the Kharkiv region and Krasnoye (known as Sontsivka in Ukraine). The latter is near Kurakhove, a key area Moscow is aiming to control as part of its push to capture the Donetsk region.
According to Russian military sources, over 190 Ukrainian settlements have been seized this year, highlighting the intensifying battle for territory. Ukrainian forces, facing shortages of both manpower and ammunition, are struggling to hold their positions.
Ukraine accused Russian forces of executing surrendered Ukrainian soldiers in what it described as a war crime. A video shared by Ukraine’s 110th Separate Mechanized Brigade allegedly shows Russian troops shooting captured Ukrainian soldiers at close range. Ukraine’s human rights ombudsman, Dmytro Lubinets, condemned the act, calling for accountability for such violations.
Ongoing Conflict
The war, nearing its third anniversary, continues to escalate as both sides trade attacks and allegations. Putin’s latest threats signal a continuation of aggressive military strategies, while Ukraine faces increasing challenges on the battlefield and growing humanitarian concerns.
