Prolonged Detention of Nnamdi Kanu Unhelpful to Nigeria – Ohanaeze President
The President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Senator John Azuta-Mbata, has appealed to the Federal Government to release the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, stressing the need for him to access urgent medical attention.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Azuta-Mbata made the appeal in a video message shared with journalists on Thursday, where he also called on Igbos across Nigeria to participate actively in the ongoing voter registration exercise by ensuring they obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
Kanu’s detention remains one of the most divisive political and security issues in the country. He was initially arrested in 2015 on charges bordering on treasonable felony, later jumped bail in 2017, and fled abroad. In June 2021, he was rearrested in Kenya in a controversial operation and has since remained in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).
Azuta-Mbata stressed that the Federal Government stands to gain little from Kanu’s prolonged detention, urging a shift toward dialogue and political settlement.
He said, “I am calling upon Ndigbo wherever you are in Nigeria to quickly take advantage of the voter registration exercise that is going on right now. Go and get your cards as quickly as possible. Secondly, I would like to call upon the Federal Government of Nigeria to quickly release Nnamdi Kanu. The Government has no serious advantage in keeping him. It is important that the government ensures his safety, his welfare, and allows him to get medical treatment as quickly as possible. The Government must adopt a political solution to this situation.”
The Ohanaeze leader emphasized that continuous incarceration of the IPOB leader only prolongs tension and leaves unresolved grievances among Nigerians, particularly in the South-East. He maintained that constructive engagement, rather than punitive measures, would pave the way for reconciliation and national unity.
