The Catholic Diocese of Awka in Anambra State has initiated an investigation into an alleged altercation involving one of its priests, Rev. Fr. Jude Muokwe, and a 50-year-old widow, Mrs. Ikeorah Maureen.
EKO HOT BLOG gathered that the incident, which occurred on Wednesday, has left the woman reportedly traumatized and in significant pain, sparking mixed reactions across the state.
According to sources, the confrontation began when Muokwe, the Manager of Angel Primary School in Ifitedunu, Dunukofia LGA, entered a classroom where Ikeorah and other school staff were holding a meeting. The meeting was focused on discussing a salary increment request to present to the school management.
A source revealed, “The widow and other staff members were having a meeting in the classroom about salary increments, which they planned to present to the school management. But the priest barged in, holding a cane, and began beating her, accusing her of being the organizer of the meeting. This led to a physical altercation between them.”
Another source from the school claimed that Ikeorah slapped the priest first, prompting him to retaliate, which escalated into a brawl.
The incident has been widely shared on social media, with a viral video showing Ikeorah crying while recounting the assault and displaying the injuries she sustained.
In response, the Catholic Diocese of Awka issued a statement on Monday expressing regret over the incident and assuring the public that a thorough investigation would take place.
“The Diocese regrets this unfortunate incident, which occurred on Wednesday, February 12, 2025,” the statement read. “The Catholic Diocese of Awka upholds integrity of character and respect for all, and cannot condone any form of misconduct in any of our schools.”
The statement, signed by the Diocese Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Charles Ndubisi, assured that disciplinary actions would be taken depending on the outcome of the investigation.
“We promise to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, assess the violation of ethical standards established by the Diocese for all Diocesan schools, and apply appropriate disciplinary actions,” the statement concluded.
