Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has emphasized the crucial role of smart packaging in ensuring food security, redefining non-oil export, and boosting foreign exchange earnings.
Speaking at the 11th edition of Propak West Africa 2024 Smart Packaging Conference 3.0, Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted the importance of innovative packaging solutions in reducing food waste and promoting sustainable practices.
Represented by Commissioner Folashade Ambrose-Medebem, the Governor stressed that smart packaging is vital to Nigeria’s economic stability, environmental sustainability, and the well-being of its citizens.
He noted that despite the country’s rich agricultural resources, significant post-harvest losses occur due to inadequate processing, packaging, and storage.
The Governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to promoting legislation that supports sustainable business practices, reduces barriers to green technologies, and champions recycling initiatives.
He emphasized the need for collaboration between the private sector, academia, and civil society to achieve success in this area.

Regional Director George Pearson highlighted Propak West Africa’s growth into the largest and most attended platform serving the manufacturing sector in West Africa.
The event showcased innovative products and solutions from over 275 exhibitors and brands from 36 countries.
Dr. Segun Ajayi-Kadiri, Director-General/CEO of the Manufacturer’s Association of Nigeria (MAN), emphasized the value addition that the manufacturing sector offers the agricultural sector.
He stressed the need to strengthen the synergy between the two sectors to deliver food security in Africa.
The three-day conference showcased diverse manufacturing machines and products, emphasizing the importance of smart packaging in extending shelf life, monitoring food quality, and reducing waste.
As Governor Sanwo-Olu urged, it is crucial to focus on combinative solutions that reduce waste and promote sustainable practices for a food-secure future.
