South African Actress Connie Chiume, ‘Black Panther’ Star, Is Dead
Veteran South African actress Connie Chiume, known for her role in “Black Panther,” has passed away at the age of 72.
EKO HOT BLOG reports that Connie Chiume, the veteran South African actress known for her role in the 2018 Marvel movie “Black Panther,” has passed away at the age of 72.
Her family confirmed her death in a statement shared on social media, noting that she died at a Johannesburg hospital.

In a brief announcement on Instagram on Tuesday, they said: “The Chiume family regrets to inform you of the passing of the internationally acclaimed award-winning actress Connie Chiume. Connie Chiume, 72, passed on at Garden City Hospital today on the 6th of August 2024. The family asks for privacy during this difficult period. Further details will be communicated by the family.”
Chiume, who portrayed the tribal leader Zawavari in both “Black Panther” and its 2022 sequel, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” was a beloved figure in South Africa.
The South African government paid tribute to her on social media, stating: “Our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of multi-award-winning and legendary actress Connie Chiume. Her outstanding work will always be remembered. #RIPConnieChiume.”
Born in 1952 to a Malawian father and a Zulu mother, Chiume initially trained as a nurse and worked as a teacher before beginning a career in entertainment that spanned more than 45 years.

Her entry into the entertainment industry came in 1977 with a musical show called “Sola Sola,” which toured Israel and Greece. Over the years, she amassed numerous credits in both stage and screen productions, including the popular South African TV drama “Gomora.”
