A petrol tanker accident occurred in the early hours of Friday in Jaji, Kaduna State, causing a major spill of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) along the busy Kaduna–Zaria highway.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), in a statement posted on X on Saturday, confirmed the incident, which happened on October 31, 2025. According to NEMA, preliminary findings indicated that the crash was caused by the impatience of the tanker driver.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that NEMA explained that its Kaduna Operations Office, led by Mallam Suleiman Muhammad, immediately activated its Emergency Response Team after receiving the alert. “The Search and Rescue Unit arrived promptly at the scene, where officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) had already commenced response activities,” the agency said.
The FRSC team, under the supervision of Kaduna Sector Commander, Tijjani Iliyasu, coordinated the safe evacuation of the tanker’s contents into another truck to prevent an explosion. The quick response by both agencies helped avert what could have been another deadly disaster.
The crash caused severe traffic gridlock on both lanes of the Kaduna–Zaria highway, forcing authorities to divert motorists through Amana, Mai Madaci, and Turunku communities.
“NEMA, FRSC, security agencies, and other stakeholders worked collaboratively to ensure public safety and ease traffic congestion,” the statement added. The agency also advised motorists to remain patient and comply with traffic officials as normal movement gradually resumed.
The incident occurred just two weeks after a petrol tanker explosion in Niger State claimed 45 lives and injured several others in Essa community, Katcha Local Government Area.
