The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has cleared the final hurdle for implementing a plan to introduce mass electric vehicle transportation in northeast Nigeria, as part of President Tinubu’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and promoting energy efficiency in the region.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the FEC approved contracts worth almost $100 million (N151.9 billion) for supplying buses and tricycles, along with establishing charging infrastructure for electric vehicles.
According to Bayo Onanuga, the contracts include:
• N2.9 billion for the supply of ten 17-seater electric buses by Bluecrest Integrated Concept Limited within six months.
• N49.6 billion for the supply of 4000 e-tricycles by Messrs Mutual Commitment Company Limited within nine months.
• N37.2 billion for the supply of 3000 tricycles by Shanghai Integrated Infrastructure Development.
• N16.3 billion for Messrs. HNCEGC to supply 100 BYD Dolphin EVs, 100 BYD Qin Plus EVs, and 37 BYD Yuan Plus EVs.
• N8.4 billion for Messrs. KB Laman Motors Nigeria Limited to establish charging points for the e-buses and tricycles.
The North East Development Commission will fund the contracts, underscoring the region’s dedication to sustainable transportation solutions.
President Tinubu initially approved the procurement of electric vehicles in October 2024 and personally inspected samples of e-vehicles, chargers, and batteries.
