The high-profile event, organized as a major highlight of the Nigerian Navy’s 70th Anniversary celebrations under the theme ‘Seven Decades of Operational Excellence’, served as a platform for the President to personally commission three newly acquired warships: NNS Oloibiri, NNS Mambila, and NNS Gurara.
In an official statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu emphasized that Nigeria’s maritime domain is heavily endowed with immense natural wealth, making it a vital foreign exchange generator and an essential artery for global trade.
He noted that the Navy’s strategic implementation of integrated surveillance networks and rapid enforcement operations has successfully wiped out piracy within the nation’s waters.
This drastic reduction in crude oil theft and sea robbery has not only secured littoral communities but has actively driven up domestic oil production, reinforced government revenue streams, and restored international investor confidence in the country’s blue economy.
The Commander-in-Chief also lauded the Navy’s multi-theater contributions beyond maritime borders, particularly its counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency achievements alongside other armed branches.
He explicitly praised the professionalism of the elite Special Boat Service and expressed high confidence that the recent induction of the Nigerian Navy Marines into ongoing operational theaters would yield even greater victories against internal security threats.
Tinubu further recognized the Navy’s robust collaboration with regional partners and international allies in stabilizing the Gulf of Guinea for commercial shipping, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to sustaining investments in naval technology, modern combat platforms, and personnel welfare.

Earlier in the event, the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, attributed these operational breakthroughs directly to the policy support, leadership, and strategic platform investments provided by the Tinubu administration.
Pledging the absolute loyalty of all officers and ratings to the Constitution and the Commander-in-Chief, Vice Admiral Abbas assured Nigerians that the Navy will continue to leverage innovation and international partnerships to defend the country’s economic interests.
The anniversary review drew a distinguished gathering of dignitaries, including Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Minister of Defence Gen. Christopher Musa (rtd), National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, the service chiefs of the Army and Air Force, and naval delegations representing several Gulf of Guinea and European nations.
