Tinubu Mourns Passing of Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Taoreed Lagbaja

President Bola Tinubu has extended his heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Taoreed Lagbaja, as well as to the Nigerian Armed Forces, following the general’s passing.

As Commander-in-Chief, President Tinubu expressed deep regret in announcing General Lagbaja’s death at the age of 56. A statement from Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, revealed that the COAS passed away on Tuesday night in Lagos after an illness.

Lt. General Lagbaja, born on February 28, 1968, was appointed Chief of Army Staff on June 19, 2023, by President Tinubu.

His distinguished career began with his enrollment at the Nigerian Defence Academy in 1987, and he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Nigerian Infantry Corps on September 19, 1992, as a member of the 39th Regular Course.

Throughout his service, General Lagbaja exhibited exemplary leadership, including roles as platoon commander in the 93 Battalion and the 72 Special Forces Battalion. He played critical roles in several key internal security operations, such as Operation ZAKI in Benue State, Lafiya Dole in Borno, Udoka in Southeast Nigeria, and Forest Sanity in Kaduna and Niger States.

A graduate of the U.S. Army War College with a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies, Lagbaja was committed to advancing his professional expertise and contributing to Nigeria’s security.

He is survived by his wife, Mariya, and their two children.

“President Tinubu extends his deepest sympathies to General Lagbaja’s family and the Nigerian Armed Forces during this difficult time. He honors General Lagbaja’s profound contributions to the nation and wishes him eternal peace,” the statement concluded.
