President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to ensure that every Nigerian is enrolled in the national identity database before the end of 2026.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the directive was disclosed by the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NIMC, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics programme.

According to Coker-Odusote, the commission has so far enrolled 137,371,080 Nigerians into the National Identity Number (NIN) database.
She said the President had instructed the commission to intensify its enrollment drive by taking registration to communities across the country.
“We are now mandated by the President that we should go down to the community level and enrol every single Nigerian.
“The President has given us till the end of this year to make sure that we capture every single Nigerian,” she said.
To meet the target, Coker-Odusote said NIMC has partnered with relevant organisations under the World Bank’s Identification for Development (ID4D) initiative to expand access to identity registration, particularly in underserved and remote communities.
The Federal Government has continued to strengthen the National Identity Number (NIN) system as part of efforts to improve digital identity management, enhance access to government services, strengthen security and support financial inclusion. Over the years, the NIN has been linked to services such as SIM card registration, passport applications, banking and other public sector services.

The latest directive is expected to accelerate the government’s drive towards achieving universal identity coverage across the country.
