- Agencies must dismantle related initiatives, including websites and training, by Wednesday evening.
- Critics warn this move undermines decades of progress in workplace inclusion and civil rights.
In a move stirring deep emotions across the nation, the Trump administration has ordered the immediate closure of all Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) programs in federal agencies, placing employees in these offices on administrative leave.
This sweeping decision, announced in a memo by acting US Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Director Charles Ezell, marks a dramatic shift in government policy under President Donald Trump.

The directive requires agency heads to notify DEIA employees of their leave status by 5 PM Wednesday and submit plans for dissolving related offices by the week’s end.
Websites, social media accounts, and training programs tied to diversity initiatives are to be dismantled without delay.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed the action on social media, stating, “To every reporter asking about this: I can gladly confirm!” She reiterated Trump’s campaign promises to end what he labeled as discriminatory practices within federal agencies, stating that DEIA programs were “illegal, immoral, and divisive.”

A Sweeping Reversal of Progress
On his first day in office, Trump signed executive orders overturning 78 of his predecessor Joe Biden’s decrees. Among these were orders promoting workplace diversity, healthcare equity, and LGBTQ+ rights.
Trump’s administration has now declared an end to diversity programs in the government, denouncing them as vehicles for “shameful discrimination” that allegedly wasted taxpayer dollars.
“These programs divided Americans by race,” the OPM memo stated, ordering agency heads to root out any efforts to obscure DEIA initiatives under new terminology. Employees who fail to report related activities risk facing “adverse
consequences.”

A Nation Divided
Critics argue this policy is a devastating blow to decades of progress in workplace inclusion. Civil rights groups have decried the decision as a thinly veiled attack on marginalized communities, particularly people of color and the LGBTQ+ population.
“This is more than a setback it’s a deliberate dismantling of protections and opportunities for countless Americans,” said a representative of the American Civil Liberties Union.
Corporate America is also feeling the ripple effects. Companies like Meta, Walmart, and Ford have already scaled back diversity programs following Trump’s election win.
These initiatives, many established in response to the Black Lives Matter movement, aimed to address longstanding racial and gender disparities.

A Somber Future
The rapid dismantling of DEIA programs has left workers and advocates reeling. Federal employees affected by the closures face uncertainty about their futures, with reduction-in-force plans expected to result in job losses.
For many, this decision represents more than a policy shift, it’s a stark reminder of the deep divisions that continue to shape America’s identity.
As the Trump administration presses forward, the debate over diversity, equity, and inclusion in the nation’s institutions rages on, with lives and livelihoods hanging in the balance.
