U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened Russia with tariffs and sanctions amid growing criticism that he favors Moscow over Ukraine, the country it has invaded.
In a statement on his Truth Social platform on Friday, Trump did not explicitly condemn Russia’s ongoing assault, which the United Nations has classified as an unjustified act of aggression. Instead, he focused on the latest wave of Russian attacks, which came shortly after the U.S. announced a temporary halt to sharing military intelligence with Ukraine.

“Based on the fact that Russia is absolutely ‘pounding’ Ukraine on the battlefield right now, I am strongly considering large-scale Banking Sanctions, Sanctions, and Tariffs on Russia until a Cease Fire and FINAL SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT ON PEACE IS REACHED,” Trump wrote.
“To Russia and Ukraine, get to the table right now, before it is too late. Thank you!!!”
Trump has repeatedly positioned himself as a potential “peacemaker” between the two nations, but his stance has drawn scrutiny, especially as he becomes increasingly critical of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky while maintaining a cordial approach toward Russian President Vladimir Putin.

During a press conference at the White House later on Friday, Trump suggested that negotiating with Russia was proving to be easier than dealing with Ukraine.
“I’m finding it more difficult, frankly, to deal with Ukraine, and they don’t have the cards,” Trump said. “It may be easier dealing with Russia.”
