Trump’s New Executive Order Sparks Fears of Expanded Muslim Travel Ban

- Trump’s new executive order raises concerns over potential Muslim-targeted travel ban.
- Advocates warn that the order could affect foreign nationals and international students advocating for Palestinian rights.
- The directive aims to suspend admissions from countries with inadequate vetting and could lead to deportations.
Civil rights advocates in the United States are sounding alarms over a new directive signed by President Donald Trump, warning that it could pave the way for another travel ban targeting Muslim-majority countries.
Released on Monday, the executive order is said to potentially affect foreign nationals already legally residing in the US and could especially target international students who advocate for Palestinian rights, experts argue.

Deepa Alagesan, a lawyer with the International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP), described the order as “bigger and worse” than the “xenophobic” travel ban Trump imposed on Muslim-majority nations in 2017.
She expressed concern that it extends beyond restricting entry to the US, suggesting it could lead to the expulsion of foreign nationals already in the country.

The new order instructs officials to identify nations with inadequate vetting and screening processes, which could lead to partial or full suspensions on admissions from these countries.
It also mandates the collection of information on citizens from these nations who entered the US since 2021 under President Biden’s administration, with a focus on their “actions and activities.”

The order further stipulates that foreign nationals in the US must not hold hostile attitudes toward American citizens, culture, or government, nor advocate for, support, or aid foreign terrorist organizations.
