Two Arrested Over Stabbing After Footy Game At Sydney Sports Ground

One man has been charged and another remains under police guard in hospital after a stabbing at a sports ground in Sydney’s north west yesterday.

A 19-year-old player and two spectators, aged 16 and 22, were stabbed in front of a crowd of hundreds after a fight broke out at the end of a rugby league match at Old Saleyards Reserve in North Parramatta at about 11.20am.

The under 20s game was between the Wentworthville Magpies and Penrith Brothers.

Superintendent Darryl Jobson from the Cumberland Police Area Commander described the incident as “appalling and senseless criminal behaviour” which would not be tolerated under any circumstances”.

Supt Jobson said tensions were believed to have been flared during the game when one of the men who was arrested was sent off for a shoulder charge.

It’s alleged one of the Penrith Brothers players went to his car after the game and returned with a knife.

All scheduled games at the oval were immediately canceled after the brawl.

He and another man fled the scene in a Toyota Aurion before police arrived.

After a search from the air, police went to a home in Cambridge Park, just before 2pm yesterday and arrested a 19-year-old man.

He was taken to Nepean Hospital, where he remains under police guard, for treatment to a hand laceration.

After continuing with their investigation, police arrested a 20-year-old man at Penrith Police Station just before 8pm.

He was charged with affray and assault occasioning actual bodily harm in company of other.

Police officers spoke to bystanders, who witnessed the alleged stabbing.

The two men who were stabbed were rushed to hospital in a critical condition yesterday, while the teenager was reported to be stable.

NSW Ambulance Inspector Nathan Sheraton said the incident was shocking in its violence.

“Wounds like this can cause an extensive amount of damage and often we can see the extent of damage done – so it is very concerning whenever we are called to jobs like this.”

“What has turned out to be a good game has ended in tragedy,” spectator Michael Chrara told 9News.

A trainer for the Magpies also said there was no reason during the game for the brawl to begin.

“It was unprovoked. The game wasn’t vicious or anything… Words got exchanged after the game and it went from there,” trainer Peter Dalby said.

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident and why may have filmed it to come forward.
