They reportedly tried to rob a man named Yusuf of his Toyota Corolla, mobile phone, and cash. At around 2:45 a.m., they also attempted to rob Hemas Udom at the same estate, but were apprehended by the police.
Initially, both defendants pleaded not guilty, prompting a full trial. During the proceedings, the victims testified that the suspects tried to steal their vehicle using a gun and a knife. The quick response of the police forced the attackers to flee, leaving the car behind but taking the key.
Later, the defendants approached the prosecution for a plea bargain and were re-arraigned on an amended two-count charge of attempted robbery. They pleaded guilty.
Justice Abike Fadipe asked if they had been forced, promised, or influenced in any way to change their plea. They confirmed that their decision was made voluntarily.
The judge then convicted and sentenced them, ruling that the prison term would be backdated to begin in May 2019, when they were first taken into custody.
