EKO HOT BLOG reports that the talks, which brought together President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, Republican leaders Mike Johnson and John Thune, as well as Democratic leaders Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries, ended in deadlock.
According to Vance, the standoff all but guarantees a shutdown, with lawmakers unable to bridge divisions on budget priorities. Republicans insisted on passing a “clean” continuing resolution that would extend government funding at current levels through December.
Democrats, however, demanded that the deal include extensions of expiring Affordable Care Act subsidies to prevent health insurance premium increases for millions of Americans. They also opposed proposed cuts to Medicaid, which they described as harmful to vulnerable households.
With the September 30 deadline looming, the stakes are high. If Congress fails to pass a spending bill by midnight, an estimated two million federal employees could be furloughed, national parks and museums may shut their doors, and government services will face widespread disruption.
Analysts warn that the shutdown could also result in billions of dollars in daily economic losses, affecting everything from travel to public safety operations.

The looming impasse underscores the deep partisan divisions shaping U.S. fiscal policy. While both sides acknowledge the urgency of avoiding a shutdown, their inability to compromise has left the country facing another period of political and economic uncertainty.
