Oguanaya made his initial legal appearance before the Ealing Magistrates’ Court on Friday, June 5, where the presiding magistrate ordered his continuous detention ahead of his next scheduled court appearance on Tuesday, June 9.
The fatal incident unfolded in the early hours of Sunday, May 24, when emergency law enforcement operatives and paramedics from the London Ambulance Service rushed to Lewisham High Street at approximately 4:40 am following urgent reports of a physical altercation.
Upon arrival, first responders discovered Ekerin on the pavement suffering from a critical, life-threatening head injury.
He was stabilized at the scene and rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency clinical intervention.
Despite intensive medical efforts to preserve his life, the victim tragically succumbed to his severe brain trauma on Saturday, May 30.
Metropolitan Police specialist officers have since established contact with his immediate next of kin to offer structured grief support during the ongoing criminal inquiry.
Homicide detectives have widened the net of their investigation, executing the arrest of a second male suspect, aged 34, on June 5, who remains under strict police interrogation.
While law enforcement agencies have not yet verified the specific structural triggers or motives behind the street clash, the victim’s twin brother, Kehinde Ekerin, confirmed that Taiwo was subjected to an entirely unprovoked assault while enjoying a routine night out.
Describing his late brother as a profoundly loving father, son, and friend whose life was cut short far too soon, Kehinde launched a GoFundMe public appeal to raise £10,000 to cover mounting funeral logistics and guarantee a dignified burial, with donors contributing £3,710 as of press time.
The tragedy coincides with a separate UK legal judgment in Norwich, where a 28-year-old Congolese national, Benjamin Katabana, was convicted of murder after fatally stabbing a UK-based Nigerian student, Uchenna Okirie.
