The states include Borno, Yobe, Adamawa and Gombe in the North-East, as well as Katsina and Zamfara in the North-West.
The UK also advised against all travel to riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states. The affected areas are described as river and swamp locations that can be accessed by boat but not by road.
The advisory further placed several other states under a warning against all but essential travel.
They include Bauchi, Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, Jigawa and Sokoto states, alongside Niger, Kogi, Plateau, Taraba, Kwara and Benue states.
The Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, was also listed under the all-but-essential travel category.
In the South-East, the advisory covers Abia, Anambra and Imo states, while non-riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa and Rivers states are also included.

The FCDO urged British nationals to carefully assess security conditions before travelling within Nigeria and to remain aware of the risks associated with their destinations.
It also warned that travel insurance could be invalidated if travellers visit areas against official UK travel advice.
The advisory provides additional guidance on security, health, entry requirements and access to consular assistance for British nationals in Nigeria.
The UK government regularly reviews its travel advice based on security developments and other risks affecting British nationals overseas.
