The University of Lagos, UNILAG, has commissioned a new Bioinformatics and Computational Biology Learning Hub to strengthen research, practical learning and manpower development in emerging areas of biological sciences.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the facility, located at the Faculty of Life Sciences, was donated by the university’s immediate past Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academics and Research, Prof. Bolanle Oboh.

Speaking at the commissioning, UNILAG Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, urged members of the university community to take the initiative in addressing societal challenges rather than waiting for external assistance.
Ogunsola said the establishment of the hub demonstrated the importance of starting initiatives even when their eventual outcomes were uncertain.
According to her, the university has the human resources, including academics and students, needed to contribute meaningfully to solving societal problems.
She, however, acknowledged that achieving the institution’s objectives would require partnerships with individuals and organisations within and outside Nigeria.
The vice-chancellor also called on members of the university community to contribute to the development of the institution, stressing that both major and modest contributions could make a difference.
Earlier, Dean of the Faculty of Life Sciences, Prof. Ganiu Oyetibo, said the hub was established in response to the growing importance of computational analysis in modern biological research.
He explained that advances such as genome sequencing had resulted in the generation of huge volumes of biological data requiring sophisticated analysis and interpretation to produce meaningful scientific knowledge.
Oyetibo identified the shortage of professionals with expertise in bioinformatics and computational biology as a major gap in Nigeria’s scientific ecosystem.
He urged students and researchers to maximise the opportunities provided by the facility and use it to strengthen research, innovation and collaboration.
The donor, Oboh, spoke on the process that led to the establishment of the hub and the need to strengthen computational capacity within biological sciences.
She also emphasised the importance of collaboration and building networks that would allow students and researchers to access the expertise and resources needed to advance their work.
