UNILORIN had a reputation for presenting certificates to graduates on the day of their convocation or a few days after.
-
However, the university appears to have taken a backward shift.
-
Graduates who left the school over a year ago have not collected their certificates.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), Ilorin, Nigeria, has failed to issue certificates to two sets of graduates more than a year after graduation.
This medium understands that the 2021/2022 set, which graduated in December 2022, was issued a statement of result instead of a certificate.

Similarly, the 2022/2023 set, which graduated in October 2023, received a statement of result.
In separate interviews with Eko Hot Blog, several graduates of the university complained about the delay in receiving their certificates.
They expressed frustration that UNILORIN had refused to communicate with them and inform them about the reasons behind the delay.
Many of them expressed disappointment, saying the university has left them stranded.
One of the affected graduates, who pleaded anonymity, said they were informed that the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Egbewole, was unaware of the delay in issuing the certificates.
“We’ve graduated over one year now, and UNILORIN has yet to give us our certificate. Information reaching us is that even the VC does not know that we’re yet to get our certificate,” they said.
Eko Hot Blog contacted another graduate from the 2021/2022 set who confirmed the delay to our reporter.
“I graduated in December 2022. The only thing I’ve heard is that ‘the certificate isn’t ready.’ I don’t think they gave any excuse concerning that,” the UNILORIN alumnus said.
A graduate from the 2022/2023 set also confirmed that their set is affected by the delay in issuing the certificate.
“Yes o. It is true,” they said in response to an inquiry by our correspondent. “I don’t know what is causing the delay. They are not saying anything about it.”
‘Statement Of Result Doesn’t Hold Water For International Applications’
An affected graduate told Eko Hot Blog that the lack of a certificate hurts UNILORIN alumni who graduated in 2022 and 2023 as they are having trouble applying for foreign scholarships and jobs.
“The statement of result issued to us is accepted for local jobs, but when it comes to international scholarships, fellowships, jobs, statement of result doesn’t hold water,” they said.
“Some people didn’t bother to renew their statement of result, which expired after one year, because they thought the school would give them their certificate soon before completing their national youth service.
“Now, almost one month after completing our service, we’ve gotten nothing from UNILORIN.”
A ‘Surprising’ And ‘Disappointing’ Shift
Eko Hot Blog understands that the current situation is a radical shift for UNILORIN, which held a long tradition of issuing certificates to graduates days after its convocation ceremony.
A graduate of the university, who spoke with this publication and did not want their name in print, said they were baffled by the university’s decline in the aspect of prompt issuance of certificates.
“The UNILORIN I knew prided itself in issuing certificates to graduates immediately after convocation. I don’t know of the reason behind the delay, but I can’t believe UNILORIN has become one of those schools that don’t issue certificates to their graduates until years after graduation,” the university’s alumnus said.
Another graduate of the federal varsity, who graduated in October 2018, said he remembered obtaining his certificate a day before the convocation ceremony.
“During my time, we got our certificates before the convocation ceremony because NYSC camp opened on our convocation day, and the school wanted us to be ready to leave for camp immediately after the convocation,” they said.
“I’m surprised and disappointed UNILORIN is now taking years to issue certificates.”
Management Blames Delay On Some Graduates Yet To Upload Their Passports
When contacted for comment on Monday, UNILORIN’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Dr. Kunle Akogun, blamed some of the graduates for the delay, saying they had refused to upload their passports on their portals for the production of their certificates.
The university’s spokesperson acknowledged that it was not the institution’s practice to delay the issuance of certificates to its graduates.
He also disclosed that UNILORIN recently took delivery of some certificates, and the relevant authorities are working on distributing them to their owners.
“It’s not the practice of the University of Ilorin to delay the issuance of certificates to its graduates. The current situation is a bit beyond the university,” Akogun said in a statement shared with Eko Hot Blog.
“Nonetheless, the university is not resting on its oars to ensure timely receipt and distribution of same [certificates].
“We have just taken delivery of some last week Thursday, and the relevant office is working on it for onward distribution to the respective owners.
“It is important to emphasise that some of the graduates have refused to upload their passport on their portals for the production of certificates. They were contacted through various media, yet they didn’t respond.”
While expressing the UNILORIN management’s regret over the delay, the university’s spokesperson promised a quick resolution.
He also appealed to graduates who are yet to upload their passports for certificates to do so on time.
“The University Management regrets the delay and promises that very soon, the matter will become a thing of the past,” Akogun stated.
“We are also using this medium to appeal to graduates who have refused to upload their passports for certificates to do so on time.
