United States Make Fresh Announcement On Trump’s Visa Restrictions Placed On Nigerians
- US visa applicants, who were denied because of Trump’s travel ban on 13 mostly Muslim-majority and African countries, can seek new decisions or submit new applications
- State Department spokesman Ned Price said applicants who were refused visas before Jan. 20, 2020, must submit new applications and pay a new application fee.

The United States mission in Nigeria has contacted all immigrant visa applicants whose applications were affected by the travel restrictions imposed by former President Donald Trump.
This followed the Presidential Proclamation signed by President Joe Biden on January 20, 2021, titled, ‘Ending discriminatory bans on entry to the United States.’
EKO HOT BLOG recalls that last year, former US President, Donald Trump imposed immigration restrictions on people from six more countries including Nigeria, and this triggered claims from rights groups that he is expanding a controversial policy dubbed the “Muslim ban”.
The Trump administration also barred immigrant visa applications from nationals of Eritrea, Kyrgyzstan, Myanmar and Nigeria and excluded people from Sudan and Tanzania from the “green card lottery” that offers permanent resident status to applicants from countries with historically low rates of immigration to the US.
“These tailored restrictions will make the US safer and more secure,” Chad Wolf, Acting Homeland Security Secretary, said in a statement, adding that the six countries (including Nugeria) failed to meet a series of security criteria, according to the department, adding they “could be a risk to the homeland”.
But the US mission in a new statement on Tuesday March 16, said its Consulate-General in Lagos has already contacted all immigrant visa applicants whose applications were affected and is prioritizing the processing of these pending cases.
