BREAKING: FG Renames University Of Abuja To Yakubu Gowon University

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the renaming of the University of Abuja to Yakubu Gowon University, in honor of the former Nigerian Head of State and elder statesman, General Yakubu Gowon.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, disclosed this to journalists after FEC’s final meeting of 2024, held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He stated, “The University of Abuja will, henceforth, be called Yakubu Gowon University. This decision reflects the government’s recognition of General Yakubu Gowon’s contributions to Nigeria’s unity and development.”

Idris further noted that the process will require legislative approval.

“The Federal Executive Council has decided to formally request the National Assembly to initiate and complete all necessary legislative actions for the name change,” he added.

In addition to the renaming, Idris announced that the Federal Executive Council would proceed on a recess from December 18, 2024, to January 6, 2025, marking the conclusion of its activities for the year.
