Bayelsa State was thrown into mourning on Thursday following the death of its Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Oborawharievwo Ewhrudjakpo, who collapsed in his office and was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yenagoa, where he was confirmed dead.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) announced the development in an official statement, describing the incident as a “shocking and painful loss.” According to the statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, the news plunged the party’s National Working Committee, led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, into deep grief.

The party hailed the late deputy governor as a steadfast, principled politician whose life was defined by honesty, conviction, and integrity. It noted that Ewhrudjakpo remained consistent in his beliefs and political values until his final moments.
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of this hero of political integrity,” the statement read. “We pray for the peaceful repose of his soul and extend our condolences to the government and people of Bayelsa State on this painful and irreparable loss.”
The PDP described Ewhrudjakpo as a loyal party man and a trusted public servant whose death leaves a significant void.
Also reacting, Ogun State Governor and Chairman of the Southern Governors’ Forum, Dapo Abiodun, expressed shock over the deputy governor’s sudden passing. In a condolence message issued from Abeokuta, Abiodun described the incident as heartbreaking, noting that Ewhrudjakpo collapsed while performing his official duties.
He said the deceased was known to work tirelessly despite signs of ill health, adding that his commitment to serving the people of Bayelsa State was unwavering.

“I received the news of his demise with deep sorrow,” Abiodun said. “My heart goes out to Governor Douye Diri, who has lost a dependable ally, and to the people of Bayelsa State. May God grant his family the strength to bear this painful loss.”
