UPDATED: Tinubu Brokers Peace in Lagos Assembly, Urges Support for Obasa's Leadership
  • The initial agreement involved Mojisola Meranda resigning as Speaker to allow for Obasa’s return, with the understanding that Obasa would subsequently resign, paving the way for a new Speaker from Lagos West.
  • A Presidency official, who spoke anonymously for lack of authorisation said the closed-door meeting resulted in President Bola Tinubu successfully resolving the conflict by urging members to collaborate with Obasa and ensure stability in the Assembly and the state.
  • The President has directed the reinstated Speaker to withdraw his lawsuit challenging his earlier impeachment.

President Bola Tinubu has intervened in the leadership crisis of the Lagos State House of Assembly, backing Mudashiru Obasa to remain as Speaker.

This decision came after a meeting with all 40 lawmakers at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, effectively resolving the ongoing dispute.

EDITOR’S PICK

Eko Hot Blog gathered that the President’s resolution contradicts the recommendations of a panel he had previously appointed to mediate the crisis.

Led by former Osun State Governor Chief Bisi Akande and former Ogun State Governor Chief Gbenga Daniel, alongside the Governance Advisory Council, the panel initially suggested that Obasa should step down after being reinstated.

The initial agreement involved Mojisola Meranda resigning as Speaker to allow for Obasa’s return, with the understanding that Obasa would subsequently resign, paving the way for a new Speaker from Lagos West.

Meranda resigned on March 3, 2025, 49 days after Obasa’s impeachment, and was re-elected as Deputy Speaker.

Obasa was then reinstated as Speaker, but contrary to the agreement, he adjourned the Assembly indefinitely and refused to resign.

Amid allegations of high-handedness, financial misappropriation, and authoritarian leadership, Mudashiru Obasa was removed as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly on January 13, 2025, by 35 lawmakers.

His replacement, Mojisola Meranda, later resigned under pressure from party leaders.

Recently, all 40 lawmakers convened at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, arriving in a Coaster bus. Meranda arrived with her colleagues, while Obasa arrived separately.

A Presidency official, who spoke anonymously for lack of authorisation said the closed-door meeting resulted in President Bola Tinubu successfully resolving the conflict by urging members to collaborate with Obasa and ensure stability in the Assembly and the state.

“Tinubu met the lawmakers behind closed-doors. They spoke on their grievances and the President has resolved the problems.

“With the development, Obasa will stay as Speaker. His position is no longer threatened. All the lawmakers have agreed to work with him.

“They all had a photo session with the President after the meeting. It went well,” the source said.

Despite some discontent among Lagos stakeholders over the decision to retain Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker of the the Assembly, Tinubu has taken steps to maintain unity within the party.

“Some stakeholders are naturally displeased Obasa reneged on the agreement with the Akande panel. I’m sure the President would engage everyone to settle the matter,” the source added.

Another source close to Mudashiru Obasa, said the President has directed the reinstated Speaker to withdraw his lawsuit challenging his earlier impeachment.

“The President told the lawmakers to allow Obasa to work, and Obasa should also withdraw the case against Meranda and the lawmakers in court. The lawmakers have agreed to this,” the source said.
