As the 2027 Lagos State governorship election draws nearer, former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode is reportedly re-emerging in political calculations, with party power brokers said to be considering deferring Seyi Tinubu’s governorship ambition to 2031.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the contest is shaping up to be among the most competitive in recent history, featuring high-profile aspirants, influential power blocs, and a vocal electorate eager to shape the state’s next leadership.

Seyi Tinubu, 40, son of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has been touted by youth and diaspora groups as a potential contender. Last year, endorsements from organisations including the Coalition of Nigerian Youth Leaders and The Future Platform encouraged him to declare his interest, though he has yet to make a formal announcement.
According to political insiders, the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) – a 30-member body of former governors, deputy governors, legislators, and elder statesmen led by Prince Tajudeen Olusi – is reportedly exploring strategies to delay Seyi Tinubu’s governorship run, allowing Ambode or Tunji Alausa to lead the party in 2027.
Ambode, who hails from the Epe district, was denied a second term in 2019 after falling out with Lagos APC leaders. While Lagos Island has historically produced governors like Tinubu, Fashola, and Sanwo-Olu, Epe stakeholders have long felt marginalised, prompting calls for Ambode or Alausa to be allowed to succeed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

A senior APC source in Ogba, Ikeja, told DAILY POST: “The idea is not to sideline Seyi Tinubu but to give him a stable runway. The party wants to avoid a repeat of 2023 when the Labour Party posed a strong challenge. Ambode or Alausa has the best chance in 2027.”
Other potential contenders include Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to President Tinubu; Mudashiru Obasa, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly; Tokunbo Abiru; and Abdul-Azeez Adediran (Jandor), the only aspirant to publicly declare his candidacy after defecting from PDP in 2025.
Political observers note that the race will be closely monitored across Lagos’ five senatorial districts: Ikorodu, Badagry, Ikeja, Lagos Island, and Epe as stakeholders and voters demand equitable representation.
Residents have expressed mixed reactions. Mrs Funke Adeyemi, a shop owner in Ikeja, said: “Whoever the party chooses, we want development, better roads, and job opportunities.” Meanwhile, university student Chidera Nwosu stressed the importance of inclusion and listening to ordinary citizens.
As Lagos approaches the 2027 elections, party strategists are balancing political lineage, regional equity, and public sentiment in what promises to be a high-stakes contest.
