EKO HOT BLOG reports that in a statement issued Monday by the U.S. Embassy in Abuja, the change, which takes effect immediately, applies to all relevant visas issued on or after July 8, 2025. The Embassy, however, clarified that previously issued U.S. visas will remain valid under their original terms.
“Effective immediately, most non-immigrant and non-diplomatic visas issued to citizens of Nigeria will be single-entry visas with a three-month validity period,” the statement said.
The decision stems from the United States’ visa reciprocity policy, which seeks to align visa terms for U.S. citizens applying to other countries with what those countries offer American travellers. The review is part of a wider global initiative focused on enhancing travel security and immigration integrity.
“Visa reciprocity is a continuous process and is subject to review and change at any time,” the statement added.
The new restrictions are guided by a set of global benchmarks, including the use of secure travel documents, proper visa overstay monitoring, and improved data-sharing between immigration and security authorities.
The U.S. Mission acknowledged Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to meet international standards and confirmed that discussions between both nations are ongoing.

“We commend the efforts by the Government of Nigeria’s immigration and security agencies,” the embassy said, adding that travellers must ensure their documentation is accurate and valid.
Despite the tighter rules, the U.S. assured Nigerians of its continued commitment to fostering strong bilateral relations.
