EDITOR’S PICKS
In a viral video, EFCC officials were seen breaking into a hotel room and hitting a woman on the face multiple times.
It was the continuation of a disturbing pattern of the anti-graft agency’s officers assaulting Nigerians during raids.
In recent months, the EFCC has adopted an aggressive operation model of breaking down the doors to people’s homes and hotels, picking up dozens of people and often assaulting them.
The commission then posts their photos online before ascertaining their guilt.
Many times in the past, the EFCC had to release innocent people who were unfairly detained and paraded as criminals.
EFCC Chairman Appears To Have Finally Woken Up
After several months of defending officers over overzealous operations, Mr. Ola Olukoyede, the EFCC chairman, appears to finally take an action on accountability.
In a statement on Thursday, the commission’s spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, said Olukoyede has ordered the arrest of two officers involved in the assault on the woman.
Oyewale said the EFCC boss has also ordered detailed investigations of the operation carried out at the hotel and assured appropriate disciplinary measures culpable officers.
“The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Mr. Ola Olukoyede has ordered the arrest of two officers of the Commission allegedly involved in the manhandling of a female staff of Regional Hotel, Ojo, Lagos,” the statement reads.
“The officers were sighted in a viral video assaulting the staff of the hotel in an early morning sting operation in Lagos.
“The operation yielded a sizable number of suspects who are still being profiled.
“The EFCC’s boss has also ordered detailed investigations of the operation carried out at the hotel and assured that appropriate disciplinary measures would be taken against any of the officers found to be culpable.
“Olukoyede assures the general public that the EFCC would continue to ply its job professionally and with profound respect for the rule of law.”
Not The First Time EFCC Officers Have Assaulted Women
Earlier this month, the EFCC’s mode of operations were also under scrutiny as its officers raided two nightclubs in Akure, the Ondo state capital, in gestapo fashion, arresting at least 50 people, including a groom-to-be.
The commission accused them of Internet fraud.
An eyewitness account said that the EFCC stormed the night clubs around 1 am in different marked vehicles and shot teargas sporadically into the air.
Many of those at the nightclubs were reportedly injured as they scampered for safety.
An X User, Oluyemi Fasipe, shared a video showing the alleged dehumanization of innocent ladies at one of the nightclubs in Akure,
“This is what your rogue officers did to innocent ladies at a club in Akure last night,” he wrote.
“They also took away their phones after this dehumanization. I am sharing this for the whole world to see how irresponsible and unprofessional your agency can be.”

Weeks later, Fasipe is still calling for justice for the assault victims of the EFCC.
