Electrical fires are highly dangerous and can escalate rapidly if not handled properly.

EDITOR’S PICKS

EKO HOT BLOG reports that unlike regular fires, using water can worsen the situation, as it conducts electricity and increases the risk of electrocution. If you ever face an electrical fire, stay calm and follow these immediate steps:

1. Cut Off the Power Source

The first and most important step is to disconnect the electricity, but only if it is safe to do so. Locate the circuit breaker or fuse box and switch off the power. This cuts off the electrical current, stopping the fire from spreading. Never attempt to unplug burning devices, as this could cause severe electrical shocks.

2. Use a Fire Extinguisher (Class C Rated)

If the fire is small, use a Class C fire extinguisher, which is designed for electrical fires. If unavailable, a Class ABC extinguisher can also be used. Follow the PASS method:

  • Pull the pin

  • Aim at the base of the fire

  • Squeeze the handle

  • Sweep from side to side

3. Use Baking Soda or a Fire Blanket

If a fire extinguisher is unavailable, use baking soda to smother small electrical fires. Baking soda contains sodium bicarbonate, which helps cut off oxygen and extinguish flames. A fire blanket can also be used to cover and suffocate the fire.

4. Evacuate and Call Emergency Services

If the fire spreads quickly or becomes too large to control, evacuate immediately and call emergency services (911 or your local fire department). Do not attempt to put out a large fire alone. Ensure everyone leaves the building and stays at a safe distance.

5. Never Use Water or Flammable Liquids

Water should never be used on an electrical fire, as it conducts electricity and may lead to electrocution. Likewise, avoid using flammable liquids like oil, alcohol, or fuel, as they can cause dangerous flare-ups.

6. Prevent Future Electrical Fires

Once the fire is out, inspect your electrical systems for hazards. Avoid overloading sockets, replace faulty wiring, and use surge protectors. Regular electrical inspections can help identify risks and prevent future fires.

Immediately In Case Of An Electrical Fire

Electrical fires require quick thinking and the right approach. Cutting off the power, using a Class C extinguisher, and calling emergency services can prevent serious damage and save lives. Always keep a fire extinguisher nearby and ensure your electrical systems are properly maintained to reduce the risk of fire.
