Zulum Urges Urgent Action on Collapsed Alau Dam
Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has called on the Federal Government to urgently repair the collapsed Alau Dam, which caused severe flooding in Maiduguri and nearby communities.
The Alau Dam, located in Konduga, was built between 1984 and 1986 to supply water for farming and household use in Maiduguri. Its failure recently led to devastating floods, prompting the governor’s appeal.
Governor Zulum made the request after receiving the findings of a committee tasked with investigating the dam’s collapse. He stressed the importance of acting quickly, noting that rainfall could return to parts of Borno as early as March.
“We are running out of time,” Zulum said. “By next week, it will be January, and we need to act fast. The Federal Ministry of Water Resources must accelerate the dam’s reconstruction. If no progress is visible in a few days, I will personally meet with the President to request that the Northeast Development Commission step in and start the work immediately. Waiting for bureaucracy may cost us precious time.”
Zulum expressed hope that with timely action and commitment, a significant portion of the collapsed structure could be rebuilt before the rainy season.
He added that the state government had already taken temporary steps to prevent further water spillage from the dam. Despite financial challenges, Zulum pledged to work alongside the Federal Government to prevent future floods of this scale in Borno.
