Tragedy struck in Zamfara State on Saturday when a commercial bus carrying a bride and her wedding guests plunged into a river while attempting to cross a broken bridge between Gwalli village and Gummi town.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the victims, numbering 19, were travelling from Fass village in Gummi Local Government Area to Kebbi State to deliver the bride to her husband after the wedding ceremony.

Eyewitnesses said the driver, unfamiliar with the terrain, tried to navigate around the collapsed section of the bridge, which had been temporarily reinforced with sandbags and stones by villagers.
The bus reportedly slipped off the makeshift filling and overturned into the river.
A relative of one of the victims, identified as Usman, said the bus was overloaded, and the driver panicked when the vehicle scraped against the unstable filling before losing control.

Seventeen bodies have so far been recovered from the river, while two passengers remain missing. The bride and a few other travellers who had stepped out of the vehicle shortly before the incident survived the crash.
