EKO HOT BLOG reports that his resignation came shortly after the emergence of former Minister of Special Duties, Kabiru Turaki, as the new PDP National Chairman during the party’s national convention held in Ibadan. With Turaki also from the North West, Makarfi said it would be inappropriate for both positions to be occupied by individuals from the same geopolitical zone.
In a letter dated November 17, 2025, and addressed to BoT Chairman Senator Adolphus Wabara, Makarfi explained that his decision aligned with his long-standing conviction about equity in party administration. He stated that stepping aside would give the new chairman full room to operate without any impression of imbalance within the party hierarchy.
He wrote that his resignation was based on the principle that the chairman and the secretary should never be drawn from the same region, noting that retaining the position would undermine the party’s zoning values. The former governor also revealed that he had previously attempted to resign two months earlier, sharing the notice on the BoT WhatsApp platform, but was persuaded to remain until after the convention.
Makarfi stressed that his decision was purely rooted in fairness and not influenced by personal disagreements. He expressed gratitude to the BoT leadership for their support and described his working relationship with members as cordial and productive.

Makarfi, who served as Kaduna State governor between 1999 and 2007 and later as senator, has held several key roles in the PDP, including a stint as Acting National Chairman during the party’s major leadership dispute in 2016 and 2017.
