Tragedy struck Zugai village in Roni Local Government Area, Jigawa State, on Tuesday afternoon when an overhead water tank collapsed on residents who had gathered to fetch water, claiming the lives of four women, including a pregnant woman, and injuring several others.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the tank, which supplies water from a solar-powered borehole, reportedly gave way while dozens of villagers were standing beneath it. Eyewitness Imrana Miko recounted the shocking incident, saying, “Three people died on the spot, while many others sustained injuries and were rushed to the hospital.”

Another resident attributed the collapse to structural weakness, noting that the supporting pillars had deteriorated under the weight of the fully filled tank.
The Chairman of the Maranda Development Association, Comrade Musa Lawal, described the scene as heartbreaking. The Roni Local Government Council Chairman, Dr. Abba Ya’u Roni, confirmed the deaths, explaining that strong winds contributed to the incident.

“The incident was caused by strong winds while people were busy fetching water. The wind pushed the tank, and it collapsed on the people,” Dr. Roni said. He added that the council has taken responsibility for all medical bills for the injured and extended sympathies to the families of the deceased, praying for their eternal rest.
Authorities have urged residents to exercise caution near large water structures, while calls have been made for proper inspection and maintenance of public utilities to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
