EKO HOT BLOG reports that Kwankwaso said he remains open to merging with another political party but stressed that such an arrangement would only be possible if the party is willing to concede either its presidential or vice presidential ticket to him.
His comments come amid growing speculation that the former Minister of Defence is under pressure to join the African Democratic Congress, ADC, as opposition forces explore a united front against the ruling party.
The ADC already has several high profile figures who have declared interest in the 2027 presidential race, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, and former Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Amaechi.
Kwankwaso is also reported to be facing pressure from the ruling All Progressives Congress to defect and support the re election bid of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027. However, his latest remarks suggest he is not inclined to join any arrangement that diminishes his political ambition.
Addressing supporters in Kano on Saturday, the NNPP leader made his position clear.
“We are looking for a party, but they must agree to give me, Rabiu Kwankwaso, a presidential or vice presidential ticket,” Kwankwaso said.
He added that any coalition that does not recognise his political weight and support base would not be viable.
Kwankwaso contested the 2023 presidential election on the platform of the NNPP, finishing fourth behind President Tinubu, Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi.
Since then, he has remained a key political figure in northern Nigeria, with significant grassroots support, particularly in Kano State, positioning him as a potential power broker ahead of the 2027 polls.
