Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has said the most realistic path to the emergence of an Igbo president is through deliberate political alliances, particularly by supporting the South West ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Eko Hot Blog reports that Kalu made the remarks during courtesy visits across Abia North, Abia Central and Abia South senatorial zones, as part of efforts to strengthen party structures and mobilise stakeholders around national unity and political stability.

In a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Press Affairs, Udora Orizu, the deputy speaker said strategic political alignment would foster trust, inclusion and reciprocity in Nigeria’s power dynamics.
He urged Igbo leaders and voters to adopt a pragmatic approach to politics, stressing that votes should be treated as investments capable of yielding long-term political dividends, rather than being driven by sentiments.
According to him, the era of negotiating for 25 per cent votes in Abia State is over, insisting that the All Progressives Congress, APC, now has the structure, momentum and grassroots support to secure outright victories in the state.
Kalu expressed confidence that the APC is well positioned to win Abia State convincingly for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in future elections, citing growing unity among party stakeholders.
He commended President Tinubu’s leadership, acknowledging that while some policies may be difficult, they reflect courage and consistency and are already producing positive outcomes.

“The time of wasting our votes to make sentimental statements is over. Politics is played with numbers, not emotions,” Kalu said.
He warned that votes cast where they do not influence outcomes amount to lost bargaining power, urging the Igbo to invest politically where their votes would count.
Kalu also called for unity among southern political blocs, stressing that a divided South could lose political leverage nationally. He maintained that President Tinubu has demonstrated inclusiveness, adding that the South East is not being marginalised in governance or project allocation.
“The president has shown political will, inclusiveness and readiness to work with the Igbo. He is a listening leader, and our people should support him and his policies,” he added.
The deputy speaker reiterated President Tinubu’s directive to APC leaders to intensify stakeholder engagement, promote reconciliation and strengthen party cohesion nationwide.
During the Abia engagements, Kalu visited former Abia State Governor and ex-Senate Chief Whip, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, in Abia North; Senator John Bob Nwannunu in Abia Central; and APC chieftain and former Hallmark Bank Managing Director, Sir Mac Wabara, in Abia South.
He said discussions focused on party unity, internal consolidation and sustained collaboration to ensure political stability and growth.
Kalu described the moment as one for reflection, reconciliation and renewed commitment to inclusive governance, reaffirming his loyalty to President Tinubu’s vision and the political advancement of the South East.
He also presented his 2-year legislative scorecard to party elders and stakeholders, inviting feedback and constructive criticism.
