A devastating flood at a care home for elderly people on the outskirts of Beijing has claimed the lives of 31 residents, according to local officials.
EKO HOT BLOG received that the incident occurred when heavy rainfall caused water levels to rise to almost 2 meters (6 feet), trapping around 40 of the 77 elderly residents inside the facility.

The care home, located in Taishitun Town’s Miyun District, primarily caters to severely disabled, low-income, and vulnerable individuals.

Emergency teams were seen wading through chest-high water in an effort to rescue those trapped.
Local officials have acknowledged loopholes in planning emergencies for the building admitting that the facility was not included in the evacuation plan due to its perceived safety.
“This reveals that our understanding of extreme weather has been insufficient, and this painful lesson has served as a wake-up call,” a Chinese official said.
The Beijing floods have resulted in a total of 44 deaths, with many more affected by the disaster. Nearby Hebei province has also been hit hard, with 16 fatalities reported due to extreme rainfall.

In the first half of the year, natural disasters have cost China 54.11 billion yuan ($7.5 billion; £5.7 billion), with flooding accounting for over 90% of the losses.
This year, floods have also wreaked havoc across China, with Typhoon Wipha striking eastern China and causing two deaths and 10 missing persons in Shandong province.
A landslide in Ya’an city killed three people two weeks prior with the deadliest incidents occurring in July 2012, when 79 people lost their lives.
