- Trade tensions rise as both sides prepare for negotiations.
US President Donald Trump has vowed to impose a 200% tariff on alcohol imports from the European Union (EU), escalating trade tensions between the two economic giants.
The threat comes in response to the EU’s planned 50% tariff on American whiskey, which was introduced as retaliation for Trump’s recent tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports into the US.

Trump denounced the EU’s move as “nasty,” accusing the bloc of being “hostile and abusive” toward the US. He demanded the immediate removal of the tariff, warning that failure to do so would result in severe countermeasures against European alcoholic products.
A European Commission spokesperson confirmed that discussions are being arranged between EU and US officials to address the dispute. Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič has already reached out to his American counterparts following Trump’s latest remarks.
The standoff marks a fresh escalation in a trade war that has shaken global markets and raised concerns over economic consequences worldwide.
Europe exports over €4.5 billion ($4.89 billion) worth of wine annually to the US, its largest export market, according to the Comité Européen des Entreprises Vins. Ignacio Sánchez Recarte, the secretary-general of the group, warned that Trump’s proposed tariffs could devastate the industry, costing thousands of jobs.

“There is no alternative market for all this wine,” he said, urging both sides to keep the alcohol industry out of the trade conflict.
The dispute mirrors previous US-EU trade battles during Trump’s first term, when he imposed tariffs on steel and aluminum. In response, the EU introduced a 25% tax on American whiskey, causing whiskey sales to Europe to plummet 20% between 2018 and 2021.
After Trump’s departure from office, the two sides negotiated a temporary exemption on certain European metal imports, easing tensions. However, Trump’s latest actions signal a renewed hardline stance, with little indication of compromise.

“If this Tariff is not removed immediately, the US will shortly place a 200% Tariff on all wines, champagnes & alcoholic products coming out of France and other EU represented countries,” Trump wrote on social media, using all capital letters for emphasis.
With the EU’s new tariffs set to take effect on April 1, the coming weeks could determine whether the trade war intensifies further or if diplomacy prevails.
