Various committees have been constituted to ensure a seamless collaboration between the Alaafin’s palace and the Oyo State Government.
These committees are tasked with organizing every aspect of the event, from cultural displays to the logistics required for hosting dignitaries and thousands of attendees expected to converge on the ancient city for the coronation.
As part of the tradition preceding the coronation, Oba Owoade will embark on a series of sacred seclusion rites, commonly referred to as the Alaafin Rituals.
These ancient ceremonies are designed to spiritually and physically prepare the monarch for the immense responsibilities that come with the throne.
The seclusion period will also connect the new Alaafin with the rich legacy of his forebears, ensuring he is fully equipped to uphold the cultural and spiritual heritage of the Oyo Empire.
The journey to the throne began when Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, on Friday, January 10, 2025, officially approved the nomination of Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade as the next Alaafin.
This significant announcement came after a meticulous selection process by the Oyo Mesi, the council of kingmakers. Following the approval, the governor formally presented the staff and instruments of office to the first-class monarch during an elaborate ceremony held on Monday, January 13, 2025.
The upcoming coronation is expected to be a spectacular event, attracting royalty, political leaders, cultural enthusiasts, and well-wishers from across Nigeria and beyond.
