Nigeria has lost a distinguished elder statesman as former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Lt. General Jeremiah Timbut Useni, passed away on Thursday, January 23, 2025, at the age of 82.
His death was confirmed by Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang in a heartfelt statement released on Thursday night.

Governor Mutfwang, through his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere, described Useni’s passing as a tremendous loss to his family, Plateau State, and the nation.
He noted that the former minister succumbed to a protracted illness.
“The passing of General Useni is a tremendous loss not only to his immediate family but also to the Nigerian Armed Forces, Plateau State, and the entire nation,” the statement read.

Jeremiah Useni, a decorated military officer and politician, served Nigeria in numerous distinguished roles.
His military career included serving as Quarter-Master General of the Nigerian Army, and he later held ministerial positions, including Minister of Transport and Minister of the FCT.
Following his retirement from the military, Useni transitioned into politics, where he remained a prominent figure.

In 2015, he was elected Senator representing Plateau South Senatorial District under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
Prior to that, he also served as Deputy Chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP).
Governor Mutfwang praised Useni’s dedication to peace and security, particularly in Plateau State and Northern Nigeria.
He emphasized the General’s legacy of service, compassion, and kindness, which left an indelible mark on the nation’s political and military landscape.
