Head coach Aliyu Zubairu has called up 30 players for the tournament, which runs from April 26 to May 18. The Flying Eagles, seven-time champions of the competition, are drawn in Group B alongside Egypt, Morocco, and South Africa as they chase one of four available spots for the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile this September.
During his European tour, Chelle, accompanied by assistant coach Hedi Taboubi, held talks with Alex Iwobi and Wilfred Ndidi in England before heading to France to meet Moses Simon at Nantes. These visits are part of Chelle’s broader preparations for Nigeria’s upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
The Super Eagles will kick off their qualification campaign against Rwanda in Kigali on March 21 before hosting Zimbabwe at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on March 25. Chelle’s immediate goal is to ensure Nigeria returns to the World Cup, having missed out on Qatar 2022 following a playoff defeat to Ghana.

While his responsibilities extend to overseeing the Flying Eagles and the CHAN Eagles, Chelle remains primarily focused on the senior national team. He is expected to attend several Nigeria Premier Football League matches in the coming weeks to scout for local talent.
This initiative aligns with the Nigeria Football Federation’s push to integrate more home-based players into the national team setup, ensuring a stronger domestic foundation as the country looks to avoid another World Cup qualification setback.
