- Their survival was secured through judicial intervention, strong party backing, and strategic legal maneuvers.
Nigeria’s political arena has witnessed numerous impeachment attempts against state governors, driven by factors such as political rivalries, clashes between the executive and legislature, and internal party conflicts.
EKO HOT BLOG reports that while some governors have been successfully removed from office, others have managed to retain power through judicial interventions, political negotiations, or robust party support. Below are some prominent Nigerian governors who have survived impeachment attempts:

1. Peter Obi (Anambra State, 2006 & 2007):
During his tenure as governor, Peter Obi faced impeachment twice. In November 2006, the Anambra State House of Assembly impeached him on charges of gross misconduct a move widely seen as politically motivated by supporters of his predecessor, Chris Uba, and the ruling PDP.

However, a court later nullified that impeachment, reinstating him in February 2007. In June 2007, another impeachment attempt led to his deputy, Virginia Etiaba, temporarily assuming power until the Supreme Court restored Obi to office.
2. Murtala Nyako (Adamawa State, 2014):
Murtala Nyako was served an impeachment notice in 2014 amid a fallout with the state legislature, which accused him of financial mismanagement and gross misconduct. Although he resigned under pressure before the process was completed, a subsequent court ruling declared the impeachment illegal, citing a lack of due process. Despite this legal vindication, Nyako was not reinstated, as his tenure had already ended.
3. Joshua Dariye (Plateau State, 2006):
In 2006, the Plateau State House of Assembly attempted to impeach Governor Joshua Dariye during President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration.
With only six out of twenty-four lawmakers supporting the move a decision criticized as unconstitutional the Supreme Court later ruled in Dariye’s favor, reinstating him as governor.
4. Rashidi Ladoja (Oyo State, 2006):
Rashidi Ladoja, governor of Oyo State, was impeached in January 2006 following a conflict with his political godfather, Lamidi Adedibu, a powerful PDP chieftain. The Supreme Court eventually ruled that due process had not been followed during the impeachment, leading to Ladoja’s reinstatement.
5. Ayodele Fayose (Ekiti State, 2018):
Governor Ayo Fayose nearly faced impeachment in 2018 due to political conflicts with the APC-led federal government. However, the loyalty of PDP lawmakers in the Ekiti State House of Assembly prevented the required two-thirds majority for his removal, allowing him to stay in office.

6. Darius Ishaku (Taraba State, 2015-2019):
Facing legal challenges over his election victory, Governor Darius Ishaku encountered an impeachment scare. Despite attempts by the state House of Assembly to oust him, the courts upheld his mandate, thereby quashing the impeachment efforts.
7. Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers State, 2007):

After winning the 2007 Rivers State governorship election, Rotimi Amaechi’s name was controversially replaced by Celestine Omehia by his own party, the PDP. Following a protracted legal battle, the Supreme Court ruled in Amaechi’s favor, confirming him as the rightful governor. Subsequent attempts by the state legislature to impeach him were thwarted by his strong political backing.
