EKO HOT BLOG reports that Ganduje, who was appointed to the role in August 2023, stepped down amidst increasing internal agitation and persistent calls for the national chairmanship to return to the North Central zone, which was originally allocated the position under the APC’s zoning agreement.
While the detailed reasons for Ganduje’s exit were not publicly disclosed, party insiders told Vanguard that his resignation may be linked to strategic political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections. According to sources, the potential return of the vice-presidential slot to the North West—Ganduje’s region—could have made it politically unbalanced for both the party chairman and vice president to come from the same zone.
“In the event that the VP slot goes back to the North West, it would not be politically acceptable for the party chairman to also come from the region,” a party insider revealed. “Besides, the chairmanship rightfully belongs to the North Central.”
In line with Section 14(2)(iii) of the APC Constitution, Dalori, who served as Ganduje’s deputy and hails from the North, has now taken over as Acting National Chairman. The constitution provides that in the event of a chairman’s resignation, the deputy from the same region should step in.
Meanwhile, speculations are already building around who might permanently occupy the chairmanship. Among the top contenders is former Nasarawa State Governor, Senator Umar Tanko Al-Makura, who reportedly commands significant influence within the party.

Party sources further disclosed that Ganduje’s personal items were discreetly moved from the APC national secretariat before the official announcement, leaving many staff and visitors stunned.
