EKO HOT BLOG reports that the funeral was initially scheduled for Friday but was delayed due to minor paperwork issues. Father José Manuel Macedo, the local priest overseeing the burial arrangements, confirmed the rescheduling on Thursday evening.
Father Macedo explained that the funeral proceedings will begin with a wake at São Cosme Chapel, followed by a solemn mass at Igreja Matriz de Gondomar, the town’s main Catholic church. Gondomar holds deep emotional significance for Diogo Jota, who began his football career there with a local club. The town is also believed to be where he met his wife, adding a personal layer to his final resting place.
While the family has not formally confirmed whether the ceremony will be private or open to the public, local residents have already begun preparations to honour Jota and his brother, with many expected to attend in a show of respect.
Jota, 27, and his 26-year-old brother, André, died in a tragic car accident near Zamora, in northwestern Spain, on Thursday. The devastating news has continued to send shockwaves through the football world.
Former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp, club legend Sir Kenny Dalglish, and current head coach Arne Slot were among the first to lead tributes to the late Portuguese star. Several Liverpool players took to social media to mourn their fallen teammate, praising his passion, talent, and vibrant personality.
Midfielder Alexis Mac Allister shared an emotional message on Instagram, writing, “I can’t believe it. I will always remember your smiles, your anger, your intelligence, your companionship, and everything that made you who you were. It hurts a lot, we will miss you. Rest in peace dear Diogo.”
Hungarian international Dominik Szoboszlai also penned a heartfelt tribute, saying, “Words cannot describe how heartbroken and devastated we are. Your smile and your love for the game will never be forgotten. We will miss you so much, but you will stay with us forever, on and off the pitch. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family. Rest in peace, brother.”

The football community continues to mourn the loss of Diogo Jota and André as they prepare for their final journey home.
