EKO HOT BLOG reports that the council’s decision followed the death of the 43rd Olubadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, on July 7, 2025. This marks the first time such a selection has been held at the new palace, with previous nominations conducted at the old palace in Oja’ba.
The Balogun of Ibadanland, Oba Tajudeen Ajibola, moved the motion to nominate Ladoja, which was seconded by the new Otun Olubadan, Oba Eddy Oyewole. All beaded crown-wearing high chiefs endorsed the nomination.
“When one king transits, another one is enthroned. It is in line with the tradition of Ibadanland that we are holding this meeting today,” Ajibola said. He added that the council’s resolution would be forwarded to the governor, who will set a date for presenting the staff of office in accordance with the 1957 Chieftaincy Declaration.

Ajibola noted that the presentation date would be scheduled after the burial of Oba Olakulehin, which takes place this week, stressing that the Olubadan stool cannot remain vacant for long.
Ladoja, born on September 25, 1944, in Gambari near Ogbomoso, is a chemical engineer and served as Oyo State Governor from 2003 to 2007. He accepted the ceremonial beaded crown in 2024, a key requirement for ascending to the throne.
