EKO HOT BLOG reports that Sanusi, who was reinstated as Emir in 2023 by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf after being deposed in 2020, visited Buhari’s Kaduna residence on Tuesday to pray for the late leader.
Former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad shared photos of the visit, referring to Sanusi as the “Emir of Kano.”
The description immediately stirred controversy on social media. Many Nigerians questioned who truly holds the throne, given that Aminu Ado-Bayero—installed after Sanusi’s removal—has challenged his deposition in court, with a ruling maintaining the status quo.
“Please, Bashir, how many Emirs of Kano do we have?” one user asked. Another queried, “Who is truly Emir of Kano now? Emir Sanusi or Emir Bayero?”
Some focused on tradition: “Until the court decides, there can’t be two Emirs. This confusion weakens the throne,” a commenter wrote. Others took a political angle: “This is what happens when politics and culture mix. The emirship has become a tool of power.”
A few praised Sanusi: “Regardless of the tussle, Sanusi carries himself with dignity. He represents progress,” one user said. Another criticized the reinstatement: “Bayero has not been fairly treated. Leadership should not be a game of musical chairs.”

Despite the online uproar, Sanusi’s visit mirrors the steady flow of condolence visits to Buhari’s family since his burial in Daura, Katsina State.
