Despite the early arrival of electoral materials by 8 a.m., a peaceful bye-election in the Onitsha North 1 state House of Assembly Constituency on Saturday saw a very low voter turnout.
Eko Hot Blog reports that while the voting process was described as smooth, with no issues of network failure or malfunctioning machines, voters largely stayed away. Officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were seen waiting for voters, who came in very small numbers.

The lack of voter enthusiasm was so significant that youths were seen playing football on major roads, and some traders were openly selling their goods despite movement restrictions.
The election is to fill the seat left empty by Justice Azuka, who was kidnapped and later killed. Candidates from major political parties such as the Labour Party, APC, APGA, and others are participating in the race.
The presiding officer for one of the wards, Ngozi Ugwuegbu, confirmed that the process was seamless and that voters who showed up were orderly. A party agent, Sylvester Mozie, and a oter, Uchenna Emerie, also confirmed the peaceful and smooth nature of the exercise.
The heavy presence of security personnel in the area ensured the election was free of violence.
