President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to immediately return to court and vacate the order freezing the bank accounts of the Osun State Government, saying the timing of the action could undermine public confidence in the forthcoming governorship election.
Eko Hot Blog reports that in a personally signed statement issued on Thursday, the President said he was “deeply embarrassed” by the timing of the anti-graft agency’s action, even though it was carried out pursuant to a valid court order.

“It has come to my notice that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) obtained a court order on August 5, 2026, freezing the accounts of the Osun State Government. I must state that I feel deeply embarrassed not by the EFCC’s exercise of its mandate backed by a court order, but by the timing of the agency’s action,” Tinubu said.
The President reaffirmed his commitment to the independence of anti-corruption and law enforcement agencies, noting that since assuming office he has consistently resisted interfering in their operations.
According to him, investigative and prosecutorial agencies must continue to discharge their constitutional responsibilities professionally, independently and without political influence.
Tinubu, however, said he had not yet received a full briefing on the circumstances that led to the court order but described the timing as inappropriate because Osun State is only days away from its governorship election.
He warned that no action by any federal institution should create the impression that the Federal Government is attempting to influence the electoral process.
“Based on the foregoing premise, I am duty-bound to issue a directive on this issue in consonance with the overriding public interest in preserving public confidence and the integrity, credibility, and fairness of our democratic process,” he stated.
The President consequently directed the EFCC to immediately return to court to vacate the order freezing the Osun State Government’s accounts and discontinue all related actions against the state.
He said the directive was issued in the overriding public interest and to safeguard public confidence in the integrity, credibility and fairness of Nigeria’s democratic process ahead of the election.
