“NIDCOM under the able leadership of Hon Abike Dabiri Erewa formally congratulates Capt. Kelechi Ndukwe, a distinguished Nigerian American officer, on his promotion to Commodore, Destroyer Squadron 60 (DESRON 60), and Commander, Task Force 65 (CTF 65) of the United States Navy,” the statement read.
The new role places Commodore Ndukwe at the helm of U S Navy destroyer operations across Europe, Africa, and the Mediterranean, based at the U S Navy’s command in Rota, Spain.
“This outstanding accomplishment makes Nigeria, the international naval community, and Nigerians living abroad proud,” NIDCOM stated.
Ndukwe, who made history in April 2021 as the first Nigerian American to command a U S Navy guided missile destroyer, the USS Halsey (DDG 97), has long been recognized for his professionalism, resilience, and distinguished service.
His journey from the son of Nigerian immigrants to one of the top-ranking officers in the U S Navy has been hailed as a powerful symbol of hard work and determination.
“This is a testament to resilience, discipline, and excellence,” said Odu.

NIDCOM emphasized that Ndukwe’s success reflects the positive impact of the Nigerian diaspora, and reaffirmed its commitment to celebrating Nigerians abroad who demonstrate integrity, diligence, and excellence.
“The promotion of Commodore Ndukwe symbolises the diaspora community’s beneficial influence and the boundless potential of Nigerians around the world,” the Commission said.
It added that such achievements not only inspire pride but also serve as motivation for young Nigerians at home and abroad.
NIDCOM concluded by extending warm congratulations once again, noting that Ndukwe’s milestone represents a “victory for all Nigerians and a testament to the spirit of global excellence rooted in Nigerian heritage.”
