The wave of tragedies rocking Lagos politics has deepened with the sudden death of Hon. Basirat Oluwakemi Mayabikan, Councillor representing Ward F (Bajulaye-Folagoro) in Somolu Local Government.
Eko Hot Blog reports that her death, was announced in the early hours of Sunday, September 21, 2025, marks the fourth recorded loss of a council leader in Lagos State within just two months.

Mayabikan, described as humble, cheerful, and deeply committed to her community, now joins the growing list of fallen council leaders, including Oluwakemi Rufai, Zainab Adeshewa Shotayo, and most recently, Princess Oluremi Nutayi Ajose, Vice Chairman of Badagry West LCDA.
The Chairman of Somolu Local Government, Hon. Lateef Ashimi, said her passing had sent “a shockwave of sorrow through the community.”
On behalf of the council, staff, and the All Progressives Congress (APC), he offered condolences to her family, colleagues, and constituents.
“We pray that Almighty Allah forgives her shortcomings, grants her the highest level of paradise, and gives her family the fortitude to bear this painful loss,” the council statement read.
The string of deaths has cast a somber mood over grassroots governance in Lagos, with residents and political observers alike expressing shock at the repeated tragedies so soon after the July swearing-in of local government officials.
