EKO HOT BLOG reports that the team, who departed South Africa aboard a Value Jet chartered flight, were initially scheduled to land in Uyo on Saturday. However, their journey was delayed following a technical incident that forced an unscheduled return to Luanda, Angola.
According to reports, the aircraft had made a scheduled refuelling stop in Luanda before resuming its journey to Nigeria. About twenty-five minutes after takeoff, the pilot reportedly heard a loud cracking sound from the aircraft’s windshield, prompting an immediate turnaround for safety reasons.
Passengers on board, including players, coaching staff, and Nigerian football officials, remained calm as the pilot made a safe return and landing in Luanda. The team disembarked and waited for further arrangements before continuing their trip to Uyo, where they eventually landed safely around 8:05 a.m. on Sunday.
Despite the unsettling experience, no injuries or damages were reported, and team officials expressed relief that the situation was handled professionally.
The Super Eagles will now focus on their upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifier against Benin Republic on Tuesday, a crucial fixture that could determine Nigeria’s qualification chances.
Nigeria currently sits third in Group C with 14 points, just one point behind South Africa and three points adrift of group leaders Benin Republic. The team must secure a convincing victory over Benin and hope that South Africa drop points against Rwanda in Mbombela to boost their qualification hopes.

In other group fixtures, South Africa were held to a goalless draw by Zimbabwe in Durban, while Benin Republic narrowly defeated Rwanda 1-0. These results have set up a tense finale as the teams battle for a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
