The Federal Government has taken another major step toward expanding access to world-class tertiary education as the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, CON, visited the University of Birmingham (UoB) Dubai Campus to advance discussions on the establishment of a University of Birmingham branch campus in Lagos, Nigeria.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the visit comes after a series of high-level engagements between the Federal Ministry of Education, the National Universities Commission (NUC), and the University of Birmingham’s leadership.

Earlier in June 2025, Dr. Alausa visited the university’s founding campus in the United Kingdom, which was followed by a reciprocal visit to Nigeria by UoB’s Senior Management Team.
After consultations with several institutions, the University of Birmingham selected the University of Lagos (UNILAG) as its partner institution, a partnership coordinated by Dr. Alausa in August.
During his Dubai visit, Dr. Alausa was received by Ben Bailey, Chief Operating Officer; Professor Yusra Mouzughi, Provost; and Cathy Gilbert, Director of Commercial Partnerships.
The Minister toured the campus and held extensive discussions with the university’s management on the operational framework for the forthcoming University of Birmingham Lagos Campus, expected to begin academic activities in January 2026.

He also interacted with students at the Dubai campus, who shared positive feedback about the university’s teaching quality, responsiveness, and global learning environment. Their experiences, the Minister said, reinforced the Federal Government’s confidence in its decision to partner with the institution.
Dr. Alausa noted that the establishment of the Lagos campus aligns with the education and human capital development priorities of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, who views education as a foundation for national transformation and economic prosperity.
To support this vision, the Minister directed that 50% of the university’s focus in Nigeria should be on postgraduate programmes, particularly in STEMM disciplines such as Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Life Sciences, and Data Science, while the other 50% would focus on undergraduate studies. This balance, he said, would strengthen the capacity of Nigerian lecturers and produce a skilled workforce to help realise the President’s $1 trillion economy goal by 2030.
Dr. Alausa expressed satisfaction with the progress made, emphasizing that the initiative aligns with the Ministry’s 6-point NESRI Agenda, which prioritises STEMM education, technical and vocational training (TVET), digitalisation, girl-child education, quality assurance, and reducing the number of out-of-school children.
The final signing ceremony for the establishment of the University of Birmingham Lagos Campus is scheduled for January 25–27, 2026, during the visit of the university’s Vice-Chancellor and Senior Management Team to Nigeria.
“This is Renewed Hope in action,” Dr. Alausa said, reaffirming the government’s commitment to delivering high-quality education and global learning opportunities for Nigerians.
